Interview with the Author

"The Healing" is part two of the series that started with "Treason". Is it very much different from the first book?

It's vastly different. Originally, both books were meant to be two parts of a single volume, but as I wrote, I realized that part two was so different from the first that it would have to stand alone. For one thing all but the three main characters are new. It also takes place in Lucius's birthplace, which is completely removed from the Torpani Empire. My writing style changed, too-"The Healing" is much more lush and descriptive than "Treason".

Was the change a conscious one?

Yes and no. "Treason" is an adventure story. "The Healing" is about going home and all it entails: family, friends, finding and/or regaining your place in the world. Anyone who's been away from home for a while may understand what Lucius feels as he draws closer to a place he never meant to see again. He's only doing it (he thinks) to help his daughter, which is probably the least selfish thing he's ever done in his life.

"He thinks"?

Oh, yeah. He's not the kind of guy who looks back, so he tells himself that he's going home for Aurelia's sake, when in truth he's a wounded animal, and wounded animals return to the den to heal. Hence the title.

But wounded animals are also very dangerous.

That's right.

So what awaits him in Castasia?

Everything and everyone he left behind. Good, bad, you name it, he's heading toward it. Though a lot happens in this part of the story, it happens over a shorter period of time compared to "Treason". It's pretty intense in spots.

Interview With the Author

How did "Treason" begin?

"Treason" began as a story for my best friend. She actually gave me the name and character of Lucius Aurelius, she told me who and what he was, where he was in his
life, and asked me to write a story about him. She didn't tell me of the other
characters; they introduced themselves as I went along.

Well, who is Lucius?

He's the commander of a troop called the Castasian mercenaries, but he and his
men have been exclusively employed by the Torpani Empire for the past twelve
years. He's been at war in some form or other for too long, and he's tired.

Was it difficult to write about him?

At first, yes. I've been writing for thirty years and I've never met a character
like him. Having him handed to me was intimidating because I knew so little
about him, and as the story progressed, he turned out to be something other
than what I anticipated. He's since proved to be the hero I've waited all my
life to write (every author has one); once I relaxed and listened to him,
we got along fairly well. Now he's the love of my life.

His name is Roman …

The Torpani Empire is very loosely based on the Romans', in that's it's
spread over a huge territory and was built by the conquest of many peoples.
The Torpani attitude is also similar to that of the old Romans.
The film "Gladiator" was hot at the time and a lot of inspiration for the
location of "Treason" came from it.

So, Lucius is not Torpani?

No, he's Castasian. He took the name after leaving home. But that's another story …
